The (R)evolution Of The Mobile Phone

Five years after the release of the iPhone, there are now over 1 billion smartphone users worldwide, according to a new report.

US research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics said the number of users topped 1 billion in the third quarter of 2012, with one out of every seven people worldwide carrying one of the devices.

“The iPhone revolutionised smartphone design and it catalysed industry growth,” Strategy Analytics senior analyst Scott Bicheno said in a statement.

“By the third quarter of 2011, we estimate there were 708 million smartphones in use worldwide. After a further year of soaring demand, the number of smartphones in use worldwide reached 1038 billion units.”

The research firm said it expected the number of users to double to 2 billion in less than three years.

Research firm Gartner expects that cellphones will be the most common device used for browsing the web by 2013. They predict the number of browser-equipped phones to exceed 1.83 billion, compared to 1.78 billion old fashioned computers in use within 3 years.

Thusly, the relentless popularity of smartphones means more and more people are shopping online using a mobile phone. Businesses should be immediately integrating a mobile marketing strategy with their Internet marketing strategy, if they haven’t already. This video below helps to explain the current and future phenomenon of the mobile phone revolution.
